Compassion Finds a Way of Bringing Safe Water to Vineyard Children's Home

Sometimes, the greatest barrier to changing lives isn't a lack of compassion; it is a lack of opportunity.
In the heart of Kayole is a place where children who have experienced loss, neglect, and abandonment are finding refuge. It is called Vineyard Children's Home.

Today, the children have something new flowing through their home: safe, clean drinking water, thanks to Maji Zima's installation of an MS-MZ water filtration system. But this story is about far more than a water filter. It is a story of unwavering faith, unexpected partnerships, and the remarkable journey of a woman who answered a calling she never imagined would become her life's purpose.

A Calling She Never Asked For

Long before Vineyard Children's Home existed, its founder watched her mother dedicate her life to helping vulnerable people. As the youngest child in the family, she often wondered why her mother spent so much time serving others. "I didn't like it," she recalls with a smile. "But my mother would always tell me, 'One day, you will do this same work.' At the time, those words felt impossible.

Life took a different path. She got married, and although she never imagined herself running a children's home, her husband encouraged her to consider it. Even then, she resisted. Helping vulnerable children felt like an overwhelming responsibility. She worried about the challenges, the regulations, and whether she could carry such a burden. Then tragedy struck. After losing her husband, she moved in with her in-laws before eventually relocating to Kayole to rebuild her life. She started several small businesses, hoping one would provide stability. None of them succeeded. Looking back, she now believes those closed doors were preparing her for something far greater.

Faith in the Midst of Uncertainty

In 2017, while living in the informal settlement of ‘Kwa Nguruwe’ behind Kayole, someone shared a word that would change the course of her life. They told her it was time to start her own children's home. The message stirred something deep within her. This time, instead of resisting, she chose to obey. She welcomed five children into her care. People questioned her decision. Some laughed. Others doubted she would succeed. But she pressed on. Before long, those five children became seventeen. Friends began arriving with bags of groceries and other supplies, often without being asked. To her, those moments became confirmation that God was indeed providing.

A Journey Filled with Challenges

The road has never been easy. The home has moved several times, often after being asked to vacate rented premises. At one point, the children lived across three different houses because there simply wasn't enough space. Today Vineyard Children's Home still operates from a rented property, with the uncertainty of their tenure. Yet despite the uncertainty, the mission has never changed. Some of the children who arrive at Vineyard have lost their parents.

Others have families but cannot safely remain at home due to neglect, abuse, or extreme hardship. Where possible, the home works toward reintegrating children with their families once stability has been restored. Watching these children heal is what keeps their founder going. "You see them arrive carrying so much pain," she says. "Then slowly they heal. They begin to smile again. They find family." For her, that transformation is worth every sacrifice.

One Conversation Changed Everything

Like many children's homes, Vineyard longed to provide safe drinking water for the children. They had learned about Maji Zima through Mary Faith Children's Home, another beneficiary that had experienced the life-changing impact of an MS-MZ water filtration system. They wanted to reach out. But there was one obstacle. To install the filtration system, the home needed to contribute KSh 12,000 toward plumbing materials, a cost that felt impossible for an organisation already struggling to meet monthly rent and daily needs. Instead of asking for help, they remained silent. They assumed the opportunity was beyond their reach. When Maji Zima learned of their situation, we knew there had to be another way. Rather than allowing finances to become a barrier to safe drinking water, we worked together to find a solution. The home would contribute KSh 500 each month toward the plumbing materials, an amount they could realistically manage without compromising the care of the children. Sometimes compassion means meeting people where they are. This partnership is proof that when organisations choose flexibility over limitation, lives can be changed.

More Than Clean Water

Today, children at Vineyard Children's Home no longer have to rely on unsafe drinking water. Every glass they drink is a reminder that someone believed they were worth investing in. For Maji Zima, this installation represents more than another completed project. It represents a partnership built on trust. It represents dignity preserved. It represents a community refusing to let financial hardship determine a child's future because clean water should never be reserved for those who can afford it. It should be available to every child.

They care deeply for vulnerable children but face financial barriers that make even the smallest infrastructure improvements feel out of reach.
